Like intuition, we all have access to empathy, but some of us are designed to experience it more than others as part of our life theme.
First, Let’s Talk About Labels
I find labels helpful … as long as:
- I’m not attached to them
- I don’t allow them to box me in
- I don’t amplify the personal characteristic once it’s been labeled
It’s important to be mindful of how you internalize the “empath” label.
I say this because, when originally exploring my chart, my humanness felt inclined to attach a “good” or “bad” to an aspect of my design. Now I realize it’s just as it’s supposed to be for the evolvement of myself and those around me.
That being said, it’s fun to get to know our unique designs better, so let’s dive in.

7 Signs of Empathy in Your Human Design Chart
Here are some key areas of your chart that may explain why you feel into other’s emotions.
Keep in mind you could have one, all, or none of these and still identify with being an Empath. If you have none, check out my article that describes Conditioned Empaths.
Note: in your chart, defined centers are coloured in and undefined centers are left white.

1: Undefined Emotional Solar Plexus Center
This is the center that governs emotions. And the most obvious way to determine if you’re a designed empath.
If you have an undefined emotional solar plexus center, you’re designed to sample the emotional waves of others. You feel someone else’s emotion and then amplify that emotional frequency back out.
Others may label you as “overly emotional,” when in fact, you’re a mirror for their emotions.
It’s so important to be in the observer role when experiencing emotion and use your intuition to determine whether or not it’s actually yours. The last thing you want is to create a personal narrative about it and internalize it when you’re meant to release it.
2: Undefined Spleen Center
The focus of this center is instinct and primal fears associated with survival and wellbeing.
If you have an undefined spleen center, external fears can be magnified and feel overwhelming.
What you’re doing is taking in the fears of others, including the media, and allowing your mind to run wild with them.
You’re meant to receive this information from others to grow wise about primal instincts, fear, and worry, and learn to use your intuition to determine whether or not something is an immediate threat. If it’s not, let it go.
Having an undefined spleen center is a chance for you to meet fear head-on and see it as a gateway to growth — and use your wisdom to help others do the same.
3: Undefined Root Center
This is a pressure center associated with the adrenal system and stress hormones. It helps us sustain our momentum to grow and evolve.
If you have an undefined root center, you absorb stress and pressure from those around you.
Although stress in itself is fuel for the body, the undefined center amplifies it. And if it’s internalized, you can feel anxious and uncomfortable.
For example, if you have an undefined root center and work in a fast-paced office, you may feel the drive and stress of others and experience it in your body with symptoms of overwhelm and anxiety.
Breathing through it, going out for a break, and realizing that it’s temporary and not yours can be very helpful.
You’re designed to use those quick shots of adrenaline to your advantage and not internalize and judge them.
4: Channel 19-49
If you have this channel, you’re highly sensitive. You can intuitively feel the needs, wants, and emotions of others and have an innate desire to support them. Just be mindful that you don’t discard your own needs and burn yourself out.
5: Feeling Cognition
If your cognition is feeling, then you have the ability to feel into the subtle energy of places and people, which can manifest as heightened empathy and compassion.
6: Reflector Type
If you’re a Reflector, you have a very open bodygraph chart (all of your centers are undefined/white). You’re extremely receptive and attuned to others because you’re constantly taking in external energy in order to learn and gain wisdom.
7: Projector Type
If you’re a projector, your aura is designed to penetrate into another’s to understand their energy. Projectors also feel into the collective energy. This is a less likely reason for being an Empath but may explain why you pick up on other’s emotional energy.
What if You Don’t Have These Empathy Signs in Your Chart?
If you strongly feel you’re an Empath but your Human Design chart doesn’t have any of the aspects above, there may still be nuances in your chart that heighten your empathic ability.
But there is another cause to consider: conditioning.
This article talks about the difference between Designed Empaths and Conditioned Empaths.
What to do If You’re a Designed Empath
Know you aren’t broken, overly emotional, or irrational.
You’re feeling into and processing the emotions of others. You’re designed to take in and release this way.
This is how you develop deep compassion.
This is how you better understand others.
This is where your wisdom lies.
But it’s so important to have an outlet to release emotions. EFT/taping, shaking, energy clearing, somatic exercises, etc. will help to clear what isn’t yours to hold. Experiment and find what works best for you.
