EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS
Dormant wounds live inside.
Buried deep within our shadows.
When we’re triggered, it’s like someone has pushed the activation button on one of those wounds.
An emotional trigger is your body’s alarm system alerting you of an internal wound that needs healing.
A few days ago, I was triggered by someone close to me.
To say I was “fired up” is putting it lightly.
My pulse was racing, my womb was blazing, I was sobbing, and it felt like I’d been energetically beaten down.
I don’t like being triggered.
I don’t like the discomfort of those wild emotions. I don’t like feeling the wounds of my ego. And I don’t like having to do the work to clear them.
But emotional triggers are a huge opportunity!
SHOULD YOU JUST LET IT GO?
If someone else had listened to the triggering conversation I’d experienced they may have said, “That was rough but just let it go.”
But I know better.
In the past, when I did “just let it go,” (i.e. shoved the emotions way down deep so they didn’t hurt so much anymore) is exactly what caused the emotional triggers I unexpectedly face at this stage in my life.
Plus, since I’ve been focusing on energy work, healing, and raising my vibration, it’s as if my body can’t store heavy emotions anymore because it isn’t an energetic match to them.
They need immediate attention.
YOU ARE A MAGNET FOR YOUR EXPERIENCES
The Law of Attraction says that we attract our experiences.
Most of the time, a person triggers us because they’re holding up a giant energetic mirror, reflecting a wound that’s already within.
A teeny tiny part of you buried subconsciously inside may actually believe what the triggering person has said.
Or perhaps a similar experience happened in your childhood and that belief was stored away — you may not even remember it.
Even if a belief, experience, or emotion has been buried, it’s still sitting in our energetic field and acting as a magnet for experiences and emotions holding the same low energetic frequency.
Here’s how to move through the discomfort of emotional triggers and use them to your advantage.
1: SIT WITH THE DISCOMFORT
The fact that the buried pain has revealed itself is an opportunity to clear it. Allowing you to break the cycle of attracting more pain.
Take a moment to sit with the discomfort. The anger. The sorrow.
Close your eyes and ask it questions. Speak to it lovingly, as if it’s a wounded child within you.
- What are you trying to tell me? I’m listening now.
- Where did you come from?
- What can I do to make you feel better?
If you find it difficult to sit still with the pain. Instead, take out a notebook and write out the answers to these questions.
2: GIVE YOURSELF WHAT YOU NEED MOST
I learned about this simple concept from the spiritual teacher Teal Swan (learn more about her in this post).
She said to live a better life, in any given moment ask yourself this simple question:
What would someone who loved themselves do?
When we’re feeling triggered, the core emotion is fear. Fear of being misunderstood. Fear of losing a relationship. Fear of lack of control.
And the antidote for fear is love.
So ask yourself that question when you’re feeling triggered.
The answer may be:
- set boundaries
- take some space for myself
- do something to raise my vibration
- cocoon in a blanket and watch Emily in Paris
3: HEAL THE WOUND
Once you’ve sat with the pain, listened to it, and understand where it came from, it’s time to let that shit go!
Physically
Move your body. Go for a walk. Do yoga. Shake.
Do something physical to help your nervous system reset.
Energetically
Physical movement can also help get your energy moving and clearing, especially shaking, but to take it to the next level, see my posts on clearing the negative energy of a bad mood and clearing your energy field.
Emotionally
Tapping or EFT (the emotional freedom technique) is a fast and effective way to release emotion.
Learn how to tap in this post.
If you find it difficult to release the emotion yourself, RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) is an amazingly effective hypnotherapy treatment facilitated by a certified practitioner.
4: EMPOWER YOURSELF
Use this opportunity to honour your strength.
It takes strength and courage to sit with your pain, stare it straight in the eyes, and listen to what it has to tell you.
It takes strength and courage to feel the true depth of your emotions.
It takes strength and courage to admit to yourself that you aren’t perfect and need healing.
It takes strength and courage to truly love every part of you.
This mantra helps me regain my power from a triggering situation:
Thank you for triggering my power.
Thank you for triggering my power.
Thank you for triggering my power.
I feel the strength of my power now and I know who I am.
YOU GOT THIS
Being triggered is tough. But so are you.
You are strong.
You are perfectly imperfect.
And if you take this uncomfortable opportunity, you’ll come out of it with one less wound in your shadow and the empowerment of knowing yourself a little better than before.
